What Is Peaberry Coffee?

A peaberry occurs when only one bean is produced by the coffee cherry, this happens naturally in all coffee growing regions. Features include an unusual oval appearance and are much smaller than regular cherries.

During the harvesting seasons coffee cherries are collected, between 5 – 10% of the cherries will contain one bean. These coffee cherries with only one bean are referred to as peaberries.

Where Do Peaberries Grow?

Peaberry coffee comes from any coffee plant within growing conditions, this is commonly known as the Bean Belt. A coffee plant prefers rich soil and mild temperatures, with lots of rain and shaded sun.

It grows best on either side of the equator, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn at elevations 3000 – 6000 feet above sea level.

As it’s nearly impossible telling a regular cherry from peaberry, during processing and sorting is when peaberrys are hand picked and separated.

How To Make Peaberry Coffee?

For the freshest cup of coffee, store whole coffee beans and grind them immediately before brewing. Furthermore in an airtight container, and keep away from sunlight.

How To Roast Peaberry Coffee?

First step into roasting peaberry coffee is picking a specific method of roasting and the roast level you desire. We recommend the Electric Coffee Roaster Machine, it’s designed for an automatic constant temperature allowing for an even roast.

How To Roast Peaberry Coffee?

1. Preheat pan on the stove or heat source, this may take 6 – 8 minutes as it reaches 350°F. We recommend 12″ Stone Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri

2. Place a single layer of green beans into frying pan. Start with 1/2 cup and adjust accordingly

3. Stir constantly, this allows for an even roast. Around 5 minutes you’ll hear the “first crack”, meaning light roast. Remove if this is you’re desired roast level

4. Anywhere between 8 – 10 minutes will be medium to dark. This will be determined by a “second crack”. At this point remove the roasted beans from heat source

5. Place them into a colander immediately and allow sufficient time to cool.

What Does Peaberry Coffee Taste Like?

Peaberries are considered superior to the rest of coffee beans harvested, this can be contributed to all the nutrients and flavors for a single bean.

They tend to be smaller, more dense and harder then regular coffee beans. This prevents oxidization from happening and keeps the freshness inside the denser shell of the coffee bean. Often described as noticeably sweeter and more flavorful than a standard bean.

What Makes Them So Expensive?
